Ode to Newspapers....

Why do I love newspapers so much?

They are old-fashioned. They get fresh ink on my hands, which in turn gets on my face/computer/clothing. They are practically outdated by the time by the time I get them. The story on the front page of the Red and Black? Known about it for over 24 hours. Old news.

Plus, they are a waste of trees. And ink.

So why do I feel like my day is not complete unless I have one?

Why do I feel obligated to pick one or two up, peruse them during my breaks (and sometimes during class)?

Why am I compelled to immediately find the crossword puzzle, sad that I hadn't been able to do for a week because of the busy-ness of life?

Why do I eat up up opinions page like the turkey sandwich I just had for lunch?

Because it is the NEWSPAPER.

It's important. And I love it.

I love flipping the pages. Having everything in my hands. Being able to write directly on it when I am doing the crossword puzzle, or just need to make a note of something.

I miss the Albany Herald's squawkbox. The comics. The editorials by people I know.

Newspapers make me feel close to home. My dad and I share them- I always try to take the sections I want and then he laughs because I've destroyed the way the paper came, all nice and neat.

Newspapers are a part of our history. Ben Franklin's almanac, Thomas Paine's Common Sense, and many many more. They have always been a pillar of society. Something that you can always count on, no matter what.

I know the internet has taken its place at the top of the news pyramid - at least for people my age. Don't get me wrong, I love the internet. I am on it constantly, checking emails, writing people from classes, wasting time, listening to Disney on Pandora, watching tv shows I've missed from that week.

But it is the newspaper. That just means something to me. And I won't be giving up on it anytime soon.

Love is not Love

"Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove. Oh no, it is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken."

This part of sonnet 116 is probably my favorite piece of poetry- although, granted, I am not a huge poetry person, so I definitely have not read an enormous amount. However, since I read this poem in 11th or 12th grade, it has always come back to me. I adore it. It speaks to me on some unconscious level and binds me to it. I feel like it is a part of me, like it explains who I am in some way. Like it encompasses everything I believe about love.

The poem goes on to say "It is the star to every wand'ring bark, whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken. Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickle's compass come, love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved."

This second part of the poem is the half that I have not yet committed to memory, but I still love to read it. I love the way Shakespeare talks about love here. Although I'm sure people has different ideas about what he means, I choose to believe my own. I imagine someone searching, looking for love, looking for someone to spend forever with, and finally finding them- like the ship in the storm who finds the lighthouse in the distance and knows if they can only make it THAT far, they will be ok.

Today has been a day of watching sappy romances on tv (thank you oxygen channel) so I just have love on my mind. Odd, but true!

HOME!

I am SO excited about going home and doing DNOW. I miss Traci terribly, especially since she has gone through so much since I have been out of the youth group. I regret distancing myself from that age group immediately upon graduating, but only because i MISS traci and garrett. they were (still are!) the best youth minister and youth minister's wife ever. I can't wait to go home and see them for a weekend....it is going to be so much fun!!

Then I can sleep ALLLLL week. Unless I call the store to see if they need any help while I'm there, cause I really miss my job....and the $8 an hour I get for working. AND i get to wear scrubs. Nothing better than that.

Secret Life

I love the secret life of the American teenager. the girl is so cute and has such pretty hair and i love their clothes. HOWEVER, this particular episode is a little annoying to me.

Birth control is a major topic tonight. All about birth control and condoms and "you're on birth control? you're a Christian! are you still a Christian?"

First of all, you can't go from being a Christian to NOT being a Christian. It just doesn't work like that. Either you ARE or you are NOT. You cannot go back and forth. You might be one and slip up, turn away, never come back, but that doesn't mean you lose your salvation. Just because you sin, just because you are not perfect doesn't mean it is taken away from you. Ergo, just because you get birth control before you are married does NOT make you not a Christian anymore.

Second, just because you HAVE birth control doesn't mean you are actually using it FOR birth control. it drives me crazy. i have been on birth control since i was a sophomore or junior in high school. NOT because i am having crazy sex all the time. Not because i am having sex at all. BECAUSE i have horrible horrible cramps and need the hormone regulation to not be in constant agonizing pain.

Now, i may be overreacting. and i know this show is exhibiting a lot of stereotypes from Christians to jocks to sluts, but still. i feel like it gives a terrible name to people like me who take medicine for reasons other than to keep me from getting pregnant.

V-day Weekend!

So, I went to atlanta for valentine's day to see my caleb....and it was fun.

on friday we went to a party where i wore an awesome dress- i'm not sure how long it will take to get the pictures because some girl took them on her camera. caleb knows her but i don't, so i can't hurry her along in sending them to me. the only bad thing about the party was that it was SO FAR from caleb's apartment and we had to walk for a while. we road the bus as far as we could but the guys live off campus so we had to walk a few blocks. i ended up taking my shoes off for a little while, but quickly put them back on before we got to the sidewalk with broken glass and bottle caps. the party was ok- i didn't really know anyone and anna didn't come, so i felt a little out of place. they had cool decorations- rose petals everywhere and streamers...it look really cute and high-schooly. they also had yummy cupcakes that i ate two of while we were there....they were pretty awesome. strawberry frosting- yum. just what i like. we got back to caleb's a little after midnight and changed, then i fell asleep while we were watching tv and woke up at like 3:30 and then actually went to bed.

caleb let me sleep late on saturday (sometimes he has trouble with this because he gets up so early) and he brought me breakfast! a blueberry bagel. it was pretty yummy. then we ate some lunch and got ready for the day.......and then we worked on my website for like 2 hours! it took a long time, but i got most of it done with caleb's help. then we went to the grocery store, where we got our valentine's day meal- lemon rosemary salmon, baked potatoes, and sauteed zucchini. yum. the salmon had a little too much rosemary for me, because we didn't know that it would be so strong after it cooked, so that was sad. then we made chocolate covered strawberries- my favorite! oh my gosh, they were SO GOOD. we froze them for a few minutes and they were awesome. i loved them. then we watched SNL and went to sleep.

sunday we went to IKEA!! i love that store. it is pretty much my favorite store ever. i can't wait to buy stuff for my house one day. i did get some drinking glasses that look really cool- i desperately needed some because all i had were four mugs that came with my plates/bowls. then we watched some more tv- Monk!- and after that i had to come back to athens....sad.

it was a pretty good weekend. today i had to work on my website a lot- i was in the for about 2 and a half hours and finally sent it in around 3:45. hopefully she'll send my grade back soon so i can know if i need to go back and work on wednesday.

thats pretty much all i have to say today. i am exhausted but have to go to chapter....hopefully it won't last too long so i can watch secret life of the american teenager and get some chickfila!

My Awesome Website

I worked on my website for over 2 hours. I actually got a lot accomplished! I have almost finished my homepage, about me page, and favorite websites page. I still have to make a resume and put it up, and add pictures and one more website. AND figure out how to get the pictures to actually show up instead of just a box with a red X on internet explorer. but i got a lot done- yay! and i will work on it for like 3 hours again tomorrow......

My Twenty-five Things

Again, I really hate doing notes on facebook, so i am just going to do it on here.

1) Exclamations points are my favorite punctuation mark. I use them frequently.

2) I would really like to see J. Edgar Hoover's "secret files" on all the presidents and political leaders. It would be SO cool........and I'm a really big history nerd.

3) I am pretty excited about learning how to make a website. My e-tailing class is my favorite! I think I will be really proud when I finish this semester.

4) I was not cool in high school, but two of my best friends were in the "crowd." They were really the only people I liked from the group.

5) The first flowers Caleb gave me were pink and yellow roses. We looked it up and those colors stand for friendship and rejection when they are put together.

6) I tend to buy things for people that I love myself. Like the earrings I got for Sara and then asked for at Christmas.

7) I love books. New books have a great smell, and I can get lost for hours. I have stayed up until all hours of the night because I can't put books down once I start them.

8) My favorite band is The Monkees. They are from the 60s, had their own TV show, and are super cool. One of my dreams in life is to meet Davy Jones, one of the members (the one with the English accent).

9) Van Gogh is my favorite artist. I have a copy of "starry night" in my room above my TV. I want 2 more and then my collection of favorites will be complete.

10) My dream car is a red '67 corvette convertible, fully restored. It will be beautiful.

12) I love love love playing poker. I am SO happy Caleb and Ryan taught me how to play.

13) We went gypsy hunting this weekend and we were successful! Oh yeah.

14) I love Michael Douglas and Nicholas Cage. They are my favorite and 2nd favorite actors. I don't really have a favorite actress, but I like Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

15) Music is my life. I don't know what I would do with myself if God didn't give me the voice I have. Although I guess He would have given me another gift...but I'm glad I got musical talents.

16) I absolutely love Christmas. It is my favorite time of year. I love to buy presents for people and eat the yummy food at everyone's houses. And I like presents. And JESUS!

17) I really like TV. I have a massive list of shows to watch (starting on monday and continuing on through the days of the week): secret life, one tree hill, CSI:Miami, house, 24, NCIS, scrubs, lost, jay leno, CSI, smallville, Monk, psych, that 70s show, friends, and a lot more.

18) I love the Duke University Blue Devils. J.J Redick drew me in, but Coach K made me stay. If I had the money to go there, I would in a heartbeat. Maybe for graduate school.

19) I love chocolate. A LOT. ice cream, candy bars, cookies, brownies, cake, etc. I will hate it when my metabolism slows down and I have to limit myself on how much I eat.

20) My favorite restaurant is Mikatas Japanese Steakhouse. I love the soup, the salad dressing, the (double) rice, the shrimp, the steak, the chicken, the veggies, and the orange sherbet. Everything except the coleslaw. I am so sad that Caleb and I can't go there for Valentine's Day this year. I also go for my birthday with my parents and sister, so at least I have that to look forward to.....over 3 months from now.

21) I want to either have my own CD, be on Broadway, or be on a TV show/in a movie. All of them would work though.

22) I really like cooking and finding new recipes. It is a little difficult because I am so picky with my food, but I think I do a pretty good job of eating different things every week. I haven't exactly mastered cooking steak yet, though, but Caleb has so that's good. I just make him do it.

23) I really want some new shoes and clothes. I know I have a lot, but there are still some different things that I really want and just can't find anywhere.

i am bummy today. i feel horrible, can't breathe, headache, backache. annoyances. i skipped my first class AGAIN because i got no sleep last night. i might do it again if i don't sleep tonight since my retail math class is easy and has no attendance policy.

i frequently work myself up over things, some that i can control and some that i can't. tonight's episode is a usual one- i miss singing. it has been so long since i have been on stage, performing in front of anyone. in fact, it has been almost two years since i was in a musical, longer since i was just on stage singing with no sets/acting/costumes. i moan about it to caleb constantly, i'm sure he is tired of hearing it: i want to be a singer. nothing else. i want to tour the country, performing in front of big or small crowds, singing my heart out on stage. i want to have my own cds in stores and do what i love every single day. i have tried so many things to make this come true- i've written enough songs to make a cd, tried to learn how to play the guitar and the piano, tried to get OTHER people who have previously written songs to write them for me, tried to record stuff with mark's equipment, inquired about recording at the levee, researched different places i've found online where you can upload your demo cds.......sigh. i don't know what else to do. other than actually learn how to play those instruments. but the guitar hurts my fingers. at least caleb's does.

anyway. this is what is bothering me right now. that, the sickness, and the fact that i have a test tomorrow and haven't slept all week. i am so tired and out of it that i am having trouble spelling words, and that does not normally happen to me (so excuse any misspelled words).

i am sleepy. i am going to crawl under the covers and probably not sleep for a while, not for lack of trying. this will more than likely be on my mind for a while, so that won't help. goooodnight.

i am pretty excited about going to my class this afternoon. i don't like that it is so late in the day but it is so much fun to learn website stuff! i am so proud of myself for actually being able to do everything so far without difficulty. hopefully it won't get much harder. and the website that i actually get graded on will be much better than my first attempt.

i had planned to go downtown today, eat at the taco stand, and shop for some shoes to wear with my dress this weekend- that did not work out too well since it is pooring down rain. now i will have to wait until tomorrow and i will HAVE to find some or not have anything to wear on my feet on friday.

*cross your fingers!* we might be getting a gym membership with our lease, possibly next week! i really hope it works out, cause i need a gym to go to soon. i feel unhealthy not working out 5 days a week- weird.

A Little Optimistic

On to an actual topic. I am usually really down when I write on here, because writing is very cathartic for me. However, today I am going to write about stuff that is a little happier.

I always feel like I have done a horrible job making friends here. I spend so much of my time alone (although a lot of the time i CHOOSE to be alone....i have turned into quite the loner) and that makes me feel like i have really failed in making a good group of friends. i am seeing how untrue that is right now. i may feel a little awkward at chapter, standing there with no one to talk to, and i know i feel that way a lot, but when i think about it, i have a pretty good group of friends here. i may not be very close to most of them, but i have at least two or three people that i feel like i can call if i need something or if i am bored/need a friend/etc. i guess somehow i expected here to be the same as home, where i have people i have known all my life and see every single day at school. but i am learning that it isn't always like that......and i have another year left here with these people! so, basically, i can be a real downer about my life sometimes, but tonight i am feeling pretty good.

if only i didn't have to go to school tomorrow.....

and i am VERY excited about semi-formals with caleb. i miss him!
